The past few years have seen the automotive industry divert its attention to a segment which has seen a massive growth. The growth is thanks to both, the taxation laws and customer preference. Compact cars have taken centre stage and now it’s Ford that has entered the ring with a car that was first showcased as a concept at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo.
Ford’s Figo Aspire is the newest entrant to the sub-4 metre segment. The segment already has a bunch of established players who have made their mark and the Figo Aspire will take them head on, but does it have what it takes? We do a specifications comparison to find out more.
The Figo Aspire will take on the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Tata Zest, the Hyundai Xcent and the Honda Amaze. Well, first things first, all these cars measure in under 4 metres with the Amaze being the most compact at 3990 mm. When it comes to width, however, the Figo Aspire and the Maruti Suzuki Dzire are at par with the Zest being the widest of the lot.
For space on offer on the inside, the Ford Figo Aspire sets a new benchmark with a wheelbase of 2491 mm followed by the Zest with 2470mm and the Dzire at 2430mm. The sub-compact sedan segment also focuses on boot space and in this department; it is the Xcent and the Amaze that lead the pack with more than 400 litres of it.
The Tata Zest comes third, while the Figo Aspire is a close fourth leaving the Dzire far behind in fifth place
Ford India offers the Figo Aspire with a 1.2-liter Ti-VCT, 1.5-liter Ti-VCT petrol and the The 1.5-liter TDCi diesel engine. The 1.5-litre petrol variant will be available exclusively with a 6-speed Powershift DCT gearbox which will be a segment first. When it comes to power, the Figo Aspire is the most powerful of the lot with 110bhp on offer with the 1.5-litre petrol engine.
We then come to the all-important department of fuel efficiency. This is where the Dzire gains a lot of points for it is the most fuel efficient car in the segment in both the petrol and diesel variants. However, Ford has worked on its diesel powertrain and the Figo Aspire clearly surpasses the Amaze on the fuel efficiency front, with an ARAI-rated 25.83 km/l.
The Figo Aspire then, is a noteworthy adversary and a strong contender for the attention of the people. Available in 4 trim levels – Ambiente, Trend, Titanium and Titanium +, the Ford Figo Aspire comes with seven colour options – Ruby Red, Sparkling Gold, Oxford White, Tuxedo Black, Deep Impact Blue, Ingot Silver and Smoke Grey.
There are a bunch of segment first features on offer too. The Ford Figo Aspire has become the first car in its league to offer driver and front-passenger airbags standard across all variants. It also is the only one to come with leather seats and a 6-speed Dual-Clutch transmission.
The Figo Aspire is priced at Rs. 4.89 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and this is extremely aggressive pricing by Ford. The American car manufacturer has managed to give a lot in the Figo Aspire and now we wait to see the verdict of the consumers. The sales figures of the car will tell all.
